We are officially a week into the New Year and I’m sure many of you are working hard on your new year’s resolutions but for those who might need that extra boost here are a few things you can do to ensure you reach your goals for 2019.

If you’ve set a goal to achieve by the end of the year you may want to first think about how you can split that up into smaller tasks. Setting yourself a huge goal to reach is not impossible and I encourage people to do so but to ensure you have the best chance of completing it I would recommend you break it down into monthly or weekly achievements that will help towards something long term. Remember it will take time so don’t feel disheartened if you aren’t seeing results immediately.

Bring along a friend, creating group goals or having a mutual goal with a friend will help you stay on track. If you have someone who will motivate you and vice versa then you are more likely to keep it up, if you begin to slack then having monthly or weekly checkups with each other will put the pressure you on to succeed. If you don’t have someone who will tag along then you can simply tell friends and family to check in on your progress every so often, this will also encourage you to keep going.

It’s completely acceptable to change your resolutions slightly, take some time to think over them again before the year really gets going. If you realise that maybe it was too ambitious then you can tailor it to make it more achievable, if your goal was to get signed by a label but you are yet to record any of your music then you might want to consider using the year to write, produce and play some smaller shows to get you ready.

On a similar note if you have a list of all the things you want to achieve this year then it would be a good idea to sort them into an order of importance. It’s easy to tell ourselves that we want to complete all ten goals on our list but ultimately to fully commit you will need to establish where and what you can sacrifice in order to reach your main goal. Think about which one would disappoint you most if you were unable to complete it, from there you can get an idea of the top 3 things that are of most importance.

At the end of the day if you’re only able to reach one of your goals then you’re on the right track. Progress is progress no matter the pace it may be at, just remember to keep going and enjoy it.
